Sarah grew up in Maine and loves it with all her heart. She left the state to study sustainable agriculture at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina and promptly returned. Her love of agriculture has taken her all over Maine, including to Unity where she lived and farmed at MOFGA, selling produce at farmers’ markets, food coops and to local caterers, as well as raising livestock.

In her mid-twenties, Sarah went to graduate school for education and received an M.Ed. She taught upper elementary and early literacy for several years before launching her floral design business - Watershed Floral.

For the past decade, Sarah has specialized in florals for weddings. Prior to moving to Pownal in late 2019, Sarah coaxed as many flowers and veggies as possible from the bit of land around her and Craig’s home in Portland.

Craig came to Maine by way of Ohio, DC, New Jersey and Boston. He’s called this state home longer than anywhere else and has three Maine children.

In 2001, after several years teaching high school English (he, too, has an M.Ed.), Craig founded Cultivating Community, a non-profit focused on food access and ag education. He served as executive director through 2019 and counts among his proudest achievements there the radical expansion and democratization of Portland’s community garden network, stewardship of a refugee farmer training program, and the establishment of Portland’s first urban farm–where Sarah and Craig also got married.

Craig now works for Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, focusing on developing a plan for eliminating hunger in the state, as well as consulting on and shaping food policy in support of Maine farmers.

Sarah and Craig’s shared love of and commitment to local food systems brought them together and continues to drive many of their goals, projects and day-to-day existence. They are thrilled to be building a farm business together.
